This week on Back Home we are hosting Martin Woods from England. He is the man behind Sun in shining blog spot, a blog on chill music and also the member of Chillbase portal team, a portal on chill community. Here is what he has to say about himself:
I first started collecting vinyl in 1979 mainly 2-Tone but also artists like Bob Marley, Burning Spear, The Clash & The Jam. I progressed on to Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode, Electro-Funk, Acid House, Balearic, New Beat but I was also listening to some Psychadelic Rock, Darkwave & Shoegaze. Ozric Tentacles made a big impact in the late 80’s and when I started getting bored of house in the early 90’s their off-shoot Eat Static and acts like Banco De Gaia, FSOL, Transglobal Underground, Revolutionary Dub Warriors, Dreadzone & Zion Train injected a new interest. I played a few parties fusing this with Progressive House from labels like Guerilla. I brought my first decks in the late 90’s and at this period was playing anything from Bluebeat, Funk, Lounge & Nu-Jazz to Jazzy Drum & Bass so beat-matching wasn’t really an option.
I started the Facebook group “Sun Is Shining” initially as a reggae group named after the classic Bob Marley & the Wailers tune. At this point there were another two similar groups and I merged forces with Mark Schofield and we expanded to include other genres we liked. Really aimed at people who liked compilations such as Café Del Mar, Buddah Beats, Ambient Dub, Late Night Tales, Pay It All Back etc. Soon after Peter Ardon approached me on Myspace suggesting that I might like his Orchid-Star project. He was right and I started to drift back into the psychedelic side once more. After a while I started a “Sun Is Shining” blog and began to interview artists and post mixes and around the same time discovered that Whirl-Y-Gig (a London global dance event) was still going strong after many years. I started to re-attend and interviewed Monkey Pilot who dj’s a marathon 8 hr set each month. This Halloween I’m making my London debut playing a chill out set at this event.
